I had to switch hosts today, it is not a fun process. I've been working on a new project for the past couple of weekends and just got it into a workable state, so naturally I want to test it live on the web-- the only issue is my (old) webhost, Sunwave was running PHP4 and my code was in PHP5. On Sunday I put in a request to get it moved to PHP5, I was told that "someone was on the job". For the next couple of days the status remained "someone is on the job" whenever I would inquire about it. Fast forward to today and I'm no longer a customer.
The issue isn't that they were taking their sweet time to do it, or that there was a complete lack of communication; the problem was the complete lack of respect and rude behavior of the support representative towards their customer. The headers of the server showed "PHP 4.4.7", I was told "someone was on the job" for numerous days.. why in the world would I even begin to think that PHP5 was also on the server?
What aggrivates me more is that whenever I did a website for a client I would suggest the hosting company to them. I've sent them a lot of business and for them to treat a customer this way just speaks loads of the company. Anyhoo, enough ranting.. here is the chat log..

So it's not a huge development, I actually just wrote it for fun because I love reading the back of my Snapple bottle caps, but it's something regardless-- and my site has been pretty idle for a while now so it needs some kind of new content ;)
Anyhoo, snapple-fact is a small script that will download a real fact from snapple.com and display it to the user. It also has the ability to loop (with a provided delay) and save facts to a file for later use.

Here are a few facts I've collected while testing:
1: A goldfish's attention span is 3 seconds.
2: Animals that lay eggs don't have belly buttons.
3: Beavers can hold their breath for 45 minutes.
4: Slugs have 4 noses.
5: A camel has 3 eyelids.
6: A honey bee can fly at 15 miles per hour.
7: A queen bee can lay 800-1500 eggs per day.
8: A bee has 5 eyelids.
9: The average speed of a house fly is 4.5 miles per hour.
10: Mosquitoes are attracted to people who have recently eaten bananas.

So I've been pretty sick this past week, laying in bed eating soup and what not.. you know the usual sickly stuff. During this time I've been bored out of my mind!
Today I decided to write a quick little python script to query all the TLDs I could think of for Google-- I just needed to get some kind of coding in, I didn't really care what it was for as long as I wrote something.
You can download the script here if you're curious; who knows, maybe someone will find another use for it.
Anyhoo, I thumbnailed all the sites and uploaded them to Photobucket.com. During this whole thing I found an interesting domain: google.vc. It has that OSX toolbar that one of the Google engineers released a while ago but was short lived because Apple complaind (IIRC). I don't think the domain is owned by Google though, regardless its still an interesting collection of Google stuff.
Ok on to the results, just to clarify they are organized alphabetically with the .co.xx TLDs at the end... I also included domains where Google wasn't the owner just for the hell of it.

I came across this audio/photo essay yesterday about Chernobyl and the aftermath twenty years later. It's really worth the watch if you're uninformed about the history of Chernobyl and have the time; really quite depressing to think they actually live like this now.

Today is System Administrator Appreciation Day, have you hugged your sysadmin lately?
I was entered as the 2006 Sysadmin of the Year; turns out I was one of the first 2500 to be entered so I got a free shirt! Woo!
Luckily I don't look like the guy on the front page, yikes.. but then again I'm not really a sysadmin, the company I code for is small so I just happen to handle that area as well.
I'm going to give you all some valuable advice: never let on that you know more than the field your in. You'll thank me later.
